9 Tips for Winter Skincare

Keep your gorgeous glow by following these expert tips!

Think the frigid, dry air dotted with snowflakes outside is the only threat to your winter skin? Heated air indoors can be just as bad for the skin on your fragile face. If you can’t hibernate all winter, what’s a glowing girl to do?

Whether you’re living in a dry climate, at a high altitude, or just taking a vacation to a snow-covered destination, we have the nine best tips for keeping winter skin hydrated, fresh, and beautiful!

Tips for Winter Skincare

  1. Drink Water: Sarah Myers with the Spa at Stein Erikson Lodge at Deer Valley in Park City, Utah says, “Hydration is key to living and recreating in a dry, high altitude climate like ours. You can begin with drinking enough water; it is suggested to drink half your body weight in ounces each day.” Try: Carry one of these reusable water bottles and refilling often!
  2. Exfoliation: It might feel counter-intuitive, but exfoliating with a scrub that’s also packed with oils will remove dry, dead skin while sealing in natural moisture. Try: BECAUSE you hit a rough patch ($36), a sugar scrub with shea butter, avocado, and berry oils to lock in moisture.
  3. Keep Your Cool: Though it might feel good when you come in from the cold, Myers cautions: “Don’t use extremely hot water, it dries out skin!” Instead, she suggests washing your face lightly in a circular motion using a cream cleanser. Try: The Stein Erikson Spa uses Eminence Organics tailored to your skin, try the Coconut Milk cleanser.
  4. Double Up on Moisturizer: Experts recommend you moisturize twice a day if you have dry winter skin. If you’ve ever been curious about serums, now’s also the time to try. In the winter, you could benefit from layering a moisturizing serum with a light moisturizer (an especially neat trick for women addicted to their summer-weight moisturizer). Try: Clairvoyant Beauty Skin Rejuvenating AHA Cream ($39) and Skin Firming DMAE & MSM Serum ($70), a duo designed to work together.
  5. Thicken Up Your Moisturizer: On your body, you can switch to a body butter, a thicker version of your typical lotion. Myers suggests you follow up exfoliation or a shower with a body butter, saying, “We use honey butter to provide an extra barrier between skin and the elements.” Try: Burt's Bees Therapeutic Honey & Shea Butter Body Butter ($13).
  6. Spa Yourself Moisturized: Don’t shy away from pro treatments in the colder months! Winter is the perfect time to try a body wrap or moisturizing facial at the on-mountain spa. The Stein Erikson spa offers an Alpine Glow Body ($165) wrap complete with a dry brush exfoliation, virgin olive oil wrap, heated blankets, and a high altitude aroma oil application to seal in moisture. Try: Stein’s Gold Facial ($235), which utilizes a bio peptide complex serum to improve fine lines, wrinkles, and puffiness while increasing moisture retention and oxygen supply to the surface of the skin.
  7. Keep Lips Covered: Lip balm is a no-brainer in cold weather, but be careful to choose the right one! Common ingredients like mineral oil (petroleum jelly) create an artificial film on your lips, signaling your skin to stop producing lipids, which actually exacerbates the dry lip. Look for balms based on natural oils or shea butter. Try: Eco Lips lip balm ($3)
  8. Always SPF: Just because it's cold or overcast doesn't mean the sun isn't hot! Sunburn is a very real threat to winter skin, so always wear your SPF, preferably at least SPF 30. Try: John Masters Organics Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 ($32)
  9. Humidify: Wake up with parched skin every morning? Indoor heat can have a very drying effect on skin. A humidifier in your bedroom will help keep skin hydrated. Try: Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier ($30).

These quick and easy fixes should keep your winter skin hydrated and soft, even in the coldest, harshest of climates!
