Using a clarifying shampoo once per week is a great way to boost your hair’s shine and bounce. “Our daily use of shampoos, conditioners and styling products has a tendency to create build up on the hair shaft leading to lackluster hair and weighed down locks,” says Gregory Patterson, a stylist at Blow, the New York City blow dry bar. By adding a clarifying shampoo to your haircare routine, you can give your mane a fresh start, as these products remove that buildup—along with chlorine and mineral deposits from water—without drying out hair.

Just wait two weeks after color, perm or keratin treatments as clarifying products can remove some of the chemicals you’ve just spent money to have put in your hair. For a DIY clarifying treatment, try mixing equal parts white vinegar with water and a squirt of lemon juice; pour over hair then relax for a few minutes before rinsing well.
