For over 100 years, the ever-changing world of cosmetics has never been boring. When we look back, we realize that we’ve come a long way (especially when you compare us to the ancient Egyptians who used kohl for eyeliner). Travel back in time with us to see where we were in the cosmetic world, and where we are now.
In this decade, women did their best to look clean and natural. Makeup was bare and minimal, and brows were full. Mascara was invented several years later, and cosmetic ingredients couldn’t yet be trusted. Women with ghost-pale skin were sought after. Women would go as far as ingesting arsenic to attain their creamy complexions. At this time, powdering your face and applying rouge were considered immoral and women were scorned for doing so. All of that would change, however, with the 1920s.
